Without a doubt the experience of University is an experience which one may never forget. It is during this time, some of the most memorable things happen and it can shape the person you become in the future. As Muslims we should always remember that we are part of a great legacy, one that started from the time of Adam (as) to the time of Muhammad (saws). We need to carry this legacy forward wherever we are, especially whilst at University. It should be apparent that we are Muslims in our speech and our actions, in the way we conduct ourselves with those around us, and in our character we should show that we are indeed the Ummah of Muhammad (SAW).
As Muslim students at University we must do our best to ensure we fulfil the rights of Allah (SWT), which is to recognise and worship Him as this is the very purpose of our existence. The same way we prioritise studying at University we should prioritise studying and seeking to understand our Deen in order to become closer to Allah (SWT).
For many of us this may be the first time we are away from home, living on our own and this could be a great test in itself. As Muslims, people who submit to the commands of our Creator, we need to make sure wherever we are, whether it be at home, work or University we behave and live in a manner which is pleasing to Allah (SWT). After all, how long will we be in this temporary life?
As sincere advice to our brothers and sisters, there is one essential and imperative concept to understand for anyone as without this, you will not be able to make it through University. This concept is the concept of Taqwa, fearing Allah (SWT). Most definitely it is the fear of Allah (SWT) that will cause a person to review his actions in whichever situation he/she is and it is the Taqwa that will safeguard a person’s Iman and Islam.
It is reported that Ali (ra) said, ‘Taqwa is to fear Al Jaleel (Allah), to act upon the revelation, to be satisfied with the little, and to prepare for the Day of Departure.’ If we can understand Taqwa in this sense, it will help us through our time at University as we will appreciate and understand that our primary concern is the concern of the hereafter and because of this we will be careful and cautious in our speech and actions. The Taqwa will safeguard us from sin and disobedience and may be the cause for us to enter Jannah insha’allah.
Always remember that any good you do in this life, the reward will never be lost as Allah (SWT) says:
Whoever works righteousness, whether male or female, while he (or she) is a true believer (of Islamic Monotheism) verily, to him We will give a good life (in this world with respect, contentment and lawful provision), and We shall pay them certainly a reward in proportion to the best of what they used to do (i.e. Paradise in the Hereafter).
